Position Overview
The Assistant Principal (Vice Principal) supports the principal in providing effective leadership and managing day-to-day school operations. This senior administrative position requires expertise in student discipline, staff supervision, operational management, and collaborative leadership. The assistant principal works closely with the principal to ensure a safe, positive learning environment and supports teachers, students, and families. The role involves supervising specific programs or grade levels, managing student discipline, supporting staff evaluations, and handling operational tasks delegated by the principal.
Responsibilities
Staff Evaluations
- Conduct regular observations and evaluations of teaching and support staff according to district evaluation systems
- Provide timely, constructive feedback to staff members on their performance
- Develop and implement performance improvement plans for staff members as needed
- Document evaluation observations, feedback, and performance data accurately
- Support professional growth through coaching, mentoring, and professional development planning
- Ensure compliance with state and district evaluation requirements and timelines
- Participate in evaluation calibration and training to maintain consistency
- Use evaluation data to inform staffing decisions, professional development needs, and school improvement planning
Student Discipline & Attendance
- Oversee student discipline procedures and conduct discipline hearings
- Manage student attendance policies and truancy interventions
- Address student behavior issues and implement consequences consistently
- Collaborate with teachers, counselors, and families to support student behavior
- Maintain accurate discipline and attendance records
- Analyze discipline and attendance data to identify trends and improve systems
- Implement restorative practices and positive behavior interventions
Program & Grade Level Supervision
- Supervise assigned programs, departments, or grade levels as delegated by principal
- Support teachers in assigned areas with instructional and operational needs
- Coordinate curriculum implementation and assessment for assigned areas
- Lead or participate in professional learning communities (PLCs) for assigned areas
- Monitor student progress and achievement in assigned programs/grade levels
- Coordinate special events, activities, and programs for assigned areas
Staff Support & Professional Development
- Support principal in conducting staff evaluations and observations
- Provide coaching and feedback to teachers and support staff
- Coordinate professional development activities and training sessions
- Support new teacher induction and mentoring programs
- Assist in hiring processes and staff assignments
- Address staff concerns and support conflict resolution
Operational Management
- Assist principal in managing day-to-day school operations
- Coordinate school schedules, calendars, and events
- Supervise support staff and coordinate operational functions
- Manage facilities use and building security
- Coordinate transportation, nutrition services, and other operational areas as assigned
- Respond to operational issues and emergencies
- Support school safety and emergency preparedness
Student Support Services
- Collaborate with counselors, social workers, and support staff to address student needs
- Participate in student support team meetings and intervention planning
- Support special education processes and IEP implementation
- Coordinate 504 accommodation plans and implementation
- Connect students and families with community resources
- Monitor at-risk students and coordinate support services
Communication & Collaboration
- Communicate regularly with teachers, staff, students, and families
- Represent the school at district meetings and events
- Support parent-teacher conferences and family engagement activities
- Collaborate with district departments and community partners
- Prepare reports and documentation as required
- Serve as principal designee in principal's absence
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in Educational Leadership, Administration, or closely related field
- Valid state administrative credential/license (Principal or equivalent)
- Minimum of 3-5 years of successful teaching experience
- Completion of state-approved administrator preparation program
- Knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices
- Understanding of school law, student discipline, and compliance requirements
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to pass background check and fingerprint clearance
- Experience with student discipline and behavior management
- Ability to work collaboratively and support school leadership
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as an assistant principal or administrative intern
- Experience at the specific grade level (elementary or secondary)
- Training in instructional leadership, school improvement, or student services
- Experience with diverse student populations and English language learners
- Knowledge of special education programs and compliance
- Experience with school safety and crisis management
- Bilingual skills (as applicable to district needs)
- Experience with technology integration and data analysis
- Advanced coursework or certification in educational leadership

Work Environment
For Administrators
This position works primarily in school and district office settings, including private office spaces, conference rooms, and various school locations. The role involves frequent collaboration with teachers, staff, district administrators, families, and community stakeholders. The position requires attendance at evening events, parent meetings, school board meetings, and district activities. The administrator works as part of a leadership team and reports to district-level administrators. The position follows the school calendar schedule with additional responsibilities during summer months and may involve travel between school sites and district offices as needed.
For The Assistant Principal
The assistant principal works in a school office setting with frequent movement throughout the building and campus. The position requires regular attendance at evening events, weekend activities, and district meetings. The assistant principal may need to respond to emergencies outside of regular school hours and serves as principal designee when needed.
Physical Requirements
This role requires the ability to sit for extended periods, use a computer keyboard and mouse, and communicate effectively via phone and video conferencing. The position involves occasional standing, walking, and lifting of light objects (up to 10 pounds). Employees must have sufficient vision and hearing to perform essential job functions.
