Position Overview
The CTE Instructor provides comprehensive instruction in career-specific technical skills and competencies aligned with industry standards. This licensed position requires expertise in technical content, CTE standards alignment, and effective pedagogy for career and technical education. The teacher creates engaging learning experiences that develop technical skills, industry knowledge, and career readiness while preparing students for post-secondary education and employment.
Responsibilities
Instructional Planning
- Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with state standards and district curriculum
- Design engaging, differentiated instruction to meet diverse student learning needs
- Plan and sequence instruction to build on prior knowledge and scaffold learning
- Integrate technology and instructional resources to enhance learning experiences
- Adapt curriculum and instructional materials to meet individual student needs
- Collaborate with grade-level or subject-area teams to align instruction and share best practices
Classroom Management
- Establish and maintain a positive, safe, and inclusive classroom environment
- Implement effective classroom management strategies and behavior support systems
- Set clear expectations and routines to promote student engagement and learning
- Address student behavior issues proactively and consistently
- Foster a culture of respect, responsibility, and academic achievement
- Collaborate with support staff and administrators to address student needs
Assessment & Evaluation
- Design and administer formative and summative assessments aligned with learning objectives
- Use assessment data to inform instruction and adjust teaching strategies
- Monitor student progress and provide timely, constructive feedback
- Maintain accurate records of student performance, attendance, and behavior
- Prepare and communicate student progress reports and grades
- Participate in data analysis and use results to improve instructional effectiveness
Instruction & Curriculum
- Deliver instruction in career and technical education areas (e.g., Welding, Business, Automotive, Culinary, Construction, Information Technology)
- Implement CTE standards-aligned curriculum and instructional materials
- Use evidence-based instructional strategies including project-based learning, hands-on training, and real-world applications
- Develop students' technical skills, industry knowledge, and career competencies
- Integrate academic skills (math, reading, writing) into technical instruction
Lab & Shop Management
- Manage laboratory, shop, or specialized instructional spaces
- Maintain equipment, tools, and materials in safe working condition
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and industry standards
- Train students in proper safety procedures and equipment operation
- Maintain inventory and order supplies and materials as needed
Industry Partnerships & Career Preparation
- Develop and maintain partnerships with industry professionals and employers
- Coordinate work-based learning opportunities including internships and apprenticeships
- Prepare students for industry certifications and credentials
- Connect students with career pathways and post-secondary opportunities
- Stay current with industry trends, technologies, and standards
Student Support & Differentiation
- Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs and skill levels
- Provide additional support and intervention for struggling students
- Challenge advanced students with enrichment activities and advanced projects
- Use data to assess student progress and adjust instruction accordingly
- Collaborate with support staff to implement accommodations and modifications
Professional Collaboration
- Collaborate with CTE department colleagues to align curriculum and share best practices
- Participate in professional learning communities (PLCs) and data team meetings
- Attend staff meetings, professional development, and training sessions
- Contribute to school-wide initiatives and improvement efforts
- Maintain industry certifications and continuing education requirements
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in relevant field OR equivalent industry experience and credentials
- Valid state CTE teaching certification/license in specific career area
- Completion of state-approved CTE teacher preparation program OR industry certification pathway
- Significant industry experience and expertise in the specific CTE area
- Current industry certifications or credentials as required by state/district
- Ability to pass background check and fingerprint clearance
- Knowledge of CTE standards and industry standards
- Understanding of adolescent development and secondary pedagogy
- Strong classroom management skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Education, Career and Technical Education, or related field
- Previous experience teaching CTE at secondary level
- Extensive industry experience with demonstrated expertise
- Multiple industry certifications and credentials
- Experience with work-based learning and industry partnerships
- Training in project-based learning and hands-on instruction
- Knowledge of career pathways and post-secondary opportunities
- Bilingual skills (as applicable to district needs)

Work Environment
For Teachers
This position works primarily in classroom settings, providing instruction to students throughout the school day. The teacher maintains a classroom environment conducive to learning and may work in various school locations including classrooms, labs, and specialized instructional spaces. The role involves frequent collaboration with colleagues, administrators, support staff, and families. The position requires attendance at staff meetings, professional development, parent-teacher conferences, and school events. The teacher works as part of a grade-level or subject-area team and reports to building administrators. The position follows the school calendar schedule and may involve after-school activities and events.
For CTE Instructors
The instructor works in specialized lab, shop, or technical spaces equipped with industry-standard equipment and tools. The position requires adherence to safety protocols and may involve working with machinery, tools, or specialized equipment. The instructor may coordinate with industry partners and may involve travel to work sites or industry locations.
Physical Requirements
Physical Demands
This position requires the ability to stand for extended periods, move throughout the classroom, and engage in physical activities as part of instruction. The role involves frequent bending, stooping, and reaching to interact with students and materials. Employees must be able to lift and carry instructional materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. The position requires manual dexterity for handling instructional materials, technology, and classroom supplies. Teachers must be able to move quickly to respond to student needs and maintain classroom safety.
