Position Overview

The English Language Development (ELD/ESL) Teacher provides comprehensive instruction to support English language acquisition and academic language development for multilingual learners. This licensed position requires expertise in second language acquisition, language proficiency standards alignment, and effective pedagogy for English learners. The teacher creates engaging learning experiences that develop English language skills while ensuring access to grade-level content and academic success.

Responsibilities

Instructional Planning

  • Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with state standards and district curriculum
  • Design engaging, differentiated instruction to meet diverse student learning needs
  • Plan and sequence instruction to build on prior knowledge and scaffold learning
  • Integrate technology and instructional resources to enhance learning experiences
  • Adapt curriculum and instructional materials to meet individual student needs
  • Collaborate with grade-level or subject-area teams to align instruction and share best practices

Classroom Management

  • Establish and maintain a positive, safe, and inclusive classroom environment
  • Implement effective classroom management strategies and behavior support systems
  • Set clear expectations and routines to promote student engagement and learning
  • Address student behavior issues proactively and consistently
  • Foster a culture of respect, responsibility, and academic achievement
  • Collaborate with support staff and administrators to address student needs

Assessment & Evaluation

  • Design and administer formative and summative assessments aligned with learning objectives
  • Use assessment data to inform instruction and adjust teaching strategies
  • Monitor student progress and provide timely, constructive feedback
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance, attendance, and behavior
  • Prepare and communicate student progress reports and grades
  • Participate in data analysis and use results to improve instructional effectiveness

Instruction & Curriculum

  • Deliver instruction in English Language Development aligned with ELD standards and language proficiency levels
  • Implement sheltered instruction and language acquisition strategies
  • Use evidence-based instructional strategies including language immersion, scaffolded instruction, and comprehensible input
  • Develop students' English language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing
  • Integrate academic language and content-area vocabulary into instruction

Language Assessment & Progress Monitoring

  • Conduct language proficiency assessments and screenings
  • Monitor student progress in English language development
  • Use assessment data to inform instruction and adjust teaching strategies
  • Track student progress toward language proficiency goals
  • Prepare and communicate language proficiency reports

Collaboration & Consultation

  • Collaborate with general education teachers to support English learners in content-area classes
  • Consult with teachers on language acquisition strategies and accommodations
  • Participate in student support team meetings and intervention planning
  • Communicate regularly with families in their home language when possible
  • Coordinate with bilingual staff and interpreters to support family engagement

Cultural Integration & Support

  • Support students' cultural integration and adjustment to school
  • Create inclusive learning environments that value students' home languages and cultures
  • Integrate culturally responsive teaching practices
  • Support students in maintaining connections to their home cultures
  • Advocate for English learners and their families

Professional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with ELD department colleagues to align curriculum and share best practices
  • Participate in professional learning communities (PLCs) and data team meetings
  • Attend staff meetings, professional development, and training sessions
  • Contribute to school-wide initiatives and improvement efforts
  • Stay current with best practices in second language acquisition and ELD instruction

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, English as a Second Language, or closely related field
  • Valid state ESL/ELD teaching certification/license
  • Completion of state-approved teacher preparation program with ESL/ELD endorsement
  • Knowledge of second language acquisition theory and practices
  • Ability to pass background check and fingerprint clearance
  • Knowledge of ELD standards, WIDA standards, and language proficiency standards
  • Understanding of child and adolescent development
  • Strong classroom management skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in ESL, Bilingual Education, or related field
  • Previous experience teaching English learners at K-12 level
  • Bilingual skills (as applicable to district needs)
  • Training in sheltered instruction, SIOP, or other ELD methodologies
  • Experience with language proficiency assessment and progress monitoring
  • Knowledge of diverse cultures and cultural competency
  • Experience working with refugee or immigrant populations
  • Training in trauma-informed care and culturally responsive teaching
  • National Board Certification

Work Environment

For Teachers

This position works primarily in classroom settings, providing instruction to students throughout the school day. The teacher maintains a classroom environment conducive to learning and may work in various school locations including classrooms, labs, and specialized instructional spaces. The role involves frequent collaboration with colleagues, administrators, support staff, and families. The position requires attendance at staff meetings, professional development, parent-teacher conferences, and school events. The teacher works as part of a grade-level or subject-area team and reports to building administrators. The position follows the school calendar schedule and may involve after-school activities and events.

For English Language Development Teachers

The teacher works in classroom settings and may provide push-in support in general education classrooms or pull-out instruction in dedicated ELD classrooms. The position involves frequent collaboration with general education teachers and may involve working with students across multiple grade levels.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to stand for extended periods, move throughout the classroom, and engage in physical activities as part of instruction. The role involves frequent bending, stooping, and reaching to interact with students and materials. Employees must be able to lift and carry instructional materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. The position requires manual dexterity for handling instructional materials, technology, and classroom supplies. Teachers must be able to move quickly to respond to student needs and maintain classroom safety.
