Position Overview

The Music/Band Teacher provides comprehensive music instruction including instrumental and/or vocal music education. This licensed position requires expertise in music content, state arts standards alignment, and effective pedagogy for music education. The teacher creates engaging learning experiences that develop musical skills, appreciation, and performance abilities while fostering a love of music and the arts.

Responsibilities

Instructional Planning

  • Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with state standards and district curriculum
  • Design engaging, differentiated instruction to meet diverse student learning needs
  • Plan and sequence instruction to build on prior knowledge and scaffold learning
  • Integrate technology and instructional resources to enhance learning experiences
  • Adapt curriculum and instructional materials to meet individual student needs
  • Collaborate with grade-level or subject-area teams to align instruction and share best practices

Classroom Management

  • Establish and maintain a positive, safe, and inclusive classroom environment
  • Implement effective classroom management strategies and behavior support systems
  • Set clear expectations and routines to promote student engagement and learning
  • Address student behavior issues proactively and consistently
  • Foster a culture of respect, responsibility, and academic achievement
  • Collaborate with support staff and administrators to address student needs

Assessment & Evaluation

  • Design and administer formative and summative assessments aligned with learning objectives
  • Use assessment data to inform instruction and adjust teaching strategies
  • Monitor student progress and provide timely, constructive feedback
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance, attendance, and behavior
  • Prepare and communicate student progress reports and grades
  • Participate in data analysis and use results to improve instructional effectiveness

Instruction & Curriculum

  • Deliver instruction in music including instrumental music (band/orchestra), vocal music (choir), or general music
  • Implement state arts standards-aligned curriculum and instructional materials
  • Use evidence-based instructional strategies including ensemble instruction, individual coaching, and music theory
  • Develop students' musical skills including technique, reading music, and performance abilities
  • Integrate music history, theory, and appreciation into instruction

Ensemble Direction & Performance

  • Direct school ensembles including band, orchestra, choir, or other musical groups
  • Plan and conduct rehearsals to prepare students for performances
  • Organize and coordinate concerts, recitals, and musical performances
  • Select appropriate repertoire that challenges students while ensuring success
  • Provide individual and small group instruction to support student development

Instrument & Equipment Management

  • Manage musical instruments, equipment, and materials
  • Maintain inventory and ensure proper care and maintenance of instruments
  • Coordinate instrument rental and distribution to students
  • Ensure safe handling and storage of instruments and equipment
  • Order supplies and materials as needed

Student Support & Differentiation

  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs and skill levels
  • Provide additional support and intervention for struggling students
  • Challenge advanced students with enrichment activities and advanced repertoire
  • Use data to assess student progress and adjust instruction accordingly
  • Collaborate with support staff to implement accommodations and modifications

Professional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with music department colleagues to align curriculum and share best practices
  • Participate in professional learning communities (PLCs) and data team meetings
  • Attend staff meetings, professional development, and training sessions
  • Contribute to school-wide initiatives and improvement efforts
  • Coordinate with community music organizations and performance venues

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Music Education or closely related field
  • Valid state music education teaching certification/license
  • Completion of state-approved teacher preparation program
  • Strong musical skills including performance ability on primary instrument(s)
  • Knowledge of music theory, history, and pedagogy
  • Ability to pass background check and fingerprint clearance
  • Knowledge of state arts standards and music curriculum
  • Understanding of child and adolescent development
  • Strong classroom management skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Music Education or related field
  • Previous experience teaching music at K-12 level
  • Experience directing ensembles and organizing performances
  • Performance experience in professional or community ensembles
  • Training in multiple instruments or vocal techniques
  • Experience with music technology and digital audio tools
  • Knowledge of diverse musical styles and cultural music
  • Bilingual skills (as applicable to district needs)
  • National Board Certification

Work Environment

For Teachers

This position works primarily in classroom settings, providing instruction to students throughout the school day. The teacher maintains a classroom environment conducive to learning and may work in various school locations including classrooms, labs, and specialized instructional spaces. The role involves frequent collaboration with colleagues, administrators, support staff, and families. The position requires attendance at staff meetings, professional development, parent-teacher conferences, and school events. The teacher works as part of a grade-level or subject-area team and reports to building administrators. The position follows the school calendar schedule and may involve after-school activities and events.

For Music/Band Teachers

The teacher works in music classrooms, practice rooms, and performance spaces. The position may require evening and weekend hours for concerts and performances. The teacher manages musical instruments and equipment and may travel to performance venues.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to stand for extended periods, move throughout the classroom, and engage in physical activities as part of instruction. The role involves frequent bending, stooping, and reaching to interact with students and materials. Employees must be able to lift and carry instructional materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. The position requires manual dexterity for handling instructional materials, technology, and classroom supplies. Teachers must be able to move quickly to respond to student needs and maintain classroom safety.
