Position Overview

The Physical Education (PE) Teacher provides comprehensive instruction in physical fitness, motor skills development, and health education. This licensed position requires expertise in movement education, state standards alignment, and effective pedagogy for physical activity. The teacher creates engaging learning experiences that promote physical fitness, healthy lifestyles, and lifelong physical activity habits while ensuring student safety and participation.

Responsibilities

Instructional Planning

  • Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with state standards and district curriculum
  • Design engaging, differentiated instruction to meet diverse student learning needs
  • Plan and sequence instruction to build on prior knowledge and scaffold learning
  • Integrate technology and instructional resources to enhance learning experiences
  • Adapt curriculum and instructional materials to meet individual student needs
  • Collaborate with grade-level or subject-area teams to align instruction and share best practices

Classroom Management

  • Establish and maintain a positive, safe, and inclusive classroom environment
  • Implement effective classroom management strategies and behavior support systems
  • Set clear expectations and routines to promote student engagement and learning
  • Address student behavior issues proactively and consistently
  • Foster a culture of respect, responsibility, and academic achievement
  • Collaborate with support staff and administrators to address student needs

Assessment & Evaluation

  • Design and administer formative and summative assessments aligned with learning objectives
  • Use assessment data to inform instruction and adjust teaching strategies
  • Monitor student progress and provide timely, constructive feedback
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance, attendance, and behavior
  • Prepare and communicate student progress reports and grades
  • Participate in data analysis and use results to improve instructional effectiveness

Instruction & Curriculum

  • Deliver instruction in physical education and health education aligned with state standards
  • Implement developmentally appropriate activities that develop motor skills, fitness, and movement concepts
  • Use evidence-based instructional strategies including movement education, skill development, and game-based learning
  • Develop students' physical fitness, coordination, and motor skills across all ability levels
  • Integrate health education topics including nutrition, wellness, and healthy lifestyle choices

Physical Activity & Safety

  • Plan and conduct physical activities including games, sports, fitness activities, and movement exercises
  • Ensure student safety through proper supervision, equipment management, and safety protocols
  • Adapt activities to accommodate students with diverse abilities and needs
  • Manage gymnasium, outdoor spaces, and equipment effectively
  • Provide instruction on proper techniques and injury prevention

Student Support & Differentiation

  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs including students with disabilities
  • Provide modifications and accommodations to ensure all students can participate
  • Use data to assess student fitness levels and motor skills development
  • Collaborate with support staff to implement accommodations and modifications
  • Support students in developing positive attitudes toward physical activity

Professional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with PE department colleagues to align curriculum and share best practices
  • Participate in professional learning communities (PLCs) and data team meetings
  • Attend staff meetings, professional development, and training sessions
  • Contribute to school-wide wellness initiatives and improvement efforts
  • Coordinate with coaches and athletic programs as appropriate

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, or closely related field
  • Valid state physical education teaching certification/license
  • Completion of state-approved teacher preparation program
  • Strong knowledge of physical education content, motor development, and fitness principles
  • Knowledge of health education content and state health standards
  • Ability to pass background check and fingerprint clearance
  • Understanding of child and adolescent development
  • Strong classroom management skills for active learning environments
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, or related field
  • Previous experience teaching physical education at K-12 level
  • Coaching experience or athletic background
  • Training in adapted physical education or working with students with disabilities
  • First aid and CPR certification
  • Experience with fitness assessment and data collection
  • Knowledge of technology integration in physical education
  • Bilingual skills (as applicable to district needs)
  • National Board Certification

Work Environment

For Teachers

This position works primarily in classroom settings, providing instruction to students throughout the school day. The teacher maintains a classroom environment conducive to learning and may work in various school locations including classrooms, labs, and specialized instructional spaces. The role involves frequent collaboration with colleagues, administrators, support staff, and families. The position requires attendance at staff meetings, professional development, parent-teacher conferences, and school events. The teacher works as part of a grade-level or subject-area team and reports to building administrators. The position follows the school calendar schedule and may involve after-school activities and events.

For Physical Education Teachers

The teacher works primarily in gymnasium, outdoor spaces, and athletic facilities. The position requires physical activity and movement throughout the day. The teacher may work in various weather conditions for outdoor activities.

Physical Requirements

Physical Demands

This position requires the ability to stand for extended periods, move throughout the classroom, and engage in physical activities as part of instruction.
