Position Overview

The Secondary Science Teacher provides comprehensive science instruction to students in grades 6-12. This licensed position requires expertise in science content, state standards alignment, and effective pedagogy for adolescent learners. The teacher creates engaging learning experiences through hands-on experiments, scientific inquiry, and real-world applications while developing students' scientific literacy and critical thinking skills.

Responsibilities

Instructional Planning

  • Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with state standards and district curriculum
  • Design engaging, differentiated instruction to meet diverse student learning needs
  • Plan and sequence instruction to build on prior knowledge and scaffold learning
  • Integrate technology and instructional resources to enhance learning experiences
  • Adapt curriculum and instructional materials to meet individual student needs
  • Collaborate with grade-level or subject-area teams to align instruction and share best practices

Classroom Management

  • Establish and maintain a positive, safe, and inclusive classroom environment
  • Implement effective classroom management strategies and behavior support systems
  • Set clear expectations and routines to promote student engagement and learning
  • Address student behavior issues proactively and consistently
  • Foster a culture of respect, responsibility, and academic achievement
  • Collaborate with support staff and administrators to address student needs

Assessment & Evaluation

  • Design and administer formative and summative assessments aligned with learning objectives
  • Use assessment data to inform instruction and adjust teaching strategies
  • Monitor student progress and provide timely, constructive feedback
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance, attendance, and behavior
  • Prepare and communicate student progress reports and grades
  • Participate in data analysis and use results to improve instructional effectiveness

Instruction & Curriculum

  • Deliver instruction in science courses including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, or integrated science
  • Implement state standards-aligned curriculum and instructional materials
  • Use evidence-based instructional strategies including inquiry-based learning, hands-on experiments, and scientific method
  • Develop students' scientific reasoning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Integrate technology and laboratory equipment to enhance scientific understanding

Laboratory Management & Safety

  • Plan and conduct laboratory activities and experiments aligned with learning objectives
  • Maintain laboratory safety protocols and ensure compliance with safety regulations
  • Manage laboratory equipment, supplies, and materials
  • Train students in proper laboratory techniques and safety procedures
  • Maintain accurate inventory and order supplies as needed

Student Support & Differentiation

  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs including students with disabilities and English learners
  • Provide additional support and intervention for struggling students
  • Challenge advanced students with enrichment activities and accelerated coursework
  • Use data to identify student needs and adjust instruction accordingly
  • Collaborate with support staff to implement accommodations and modifications

Professional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with science department colleagues to align curriculum and share best practices
  • Participate in professional learning communities (PLCs) and data team meetings
  • Attend staff meetings, professional development, and training sessions
  • Contribute to school-wide initiatives and improvement efforts
  • Mentor and support new teachers as appropriate

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Science Education, or closely related field
  • Valid state secondary science teaching certification/license
  • Completion of state-approved teacher preparation program
  • Strong content knowledge in science including biology, chemistry, physics, or earth science
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and regulations
  • Ability to pass background check and fingerprint clearance
  • Knowledge of state science standards and curriculum
  • Understanding of adolescent development and secondary pedagogy
  • Strong classroom management skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Science, Science Education, or related field
  • Previous experience teaching science at the secondary level
  • Experience teaching advanced science courses (AP, IB, or honors)
  • Training in differentiated instruction and response to intervention (RTI)
  • Experience with laboratory management and safety protocols
  • Knowledge of inquiry-based learning and project-based instruction
  • Bilingual skills (as applicable to district needs)
  • National Board Certification

Work Environment

For Teachers

This position works primarily in classroom settings, providing instruction to students throughout the school day. The teacher maintains a classroom environment conducive to learning and may work in various school locations including classrooms, labs, and specialized instructional spaces. The role involves frequent collaboration with colleagues, administrators, support staff, and families. The position requires attendance at staff meetings, professional development, parent-teacher conferences, and school events. The teacher works as part of a grade-level or subject-area team and reports to building administrators. The position follows the school calendar schedule and may involve after-school activities and events.

For Science Teachers

The teacher works in science classrooms and laboratory spaces equipped with scientific equipment and materials. The position requires adherence to laboratory safety protocols and may involve handling chemicals and scientific equipment.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to stand for extended periods, move throughout the classroom, and engage in physical activities as part of instruction. The role involves frequent bending, stooping, and reaching to interact with students and materials. Employees must be able to lift and carry instructional materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. The position requires manual dexterity for handling instructional materials, technology, and classroom supplies. Teachers must be able to move quickly to respond to student needs and maintain classroom safety.
