Position Overview
The Electrician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems and equipment throughout school facilities. This licensed professional ensures safe, reliable electrical service to support educational operations. The role requires technical expertise, strict adherence to electrical codes, and the ability to work independently on complex electrical systems.
Responsibilities
- Install, maintain, and repair electrical systems including wiring, circuits, panels, and equipment
- Troubleshoot electrical problems using testing equipment and technical knowledge
- Perform preventative maintenance on electrical systems and equipment
- Inspect electrical systems for code compliance, safety hazards, and needed repairs
- Replace or repair defective electrical components including switches, outlets, breakers, and fixtures
- Install and maintain lighting systems including interior, exterior, and emergency lighting
- Test and verify electrical systems meet code requirements and safety standards
- Maintain accurate records of electrical work, inspections, and repairs
- Coordinate with contractors for major electrical projects or specialized installations
- Respond to emergency electrical service calls, including after-hours when necessary
- Ensure compliance with National Electrical Code (NEC) and local building codes
- Train other staff on basic electrical safety and operation procedures
- Maintain tools, equipment, and electrical parts inventory
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid journeyman or master electrician license as required by state/local regulations
- Minimum of 3-5 years of electrical installation and repair experience
- Knowledge of electrical systems, codes, and safety procedures
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, and technical manuals
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds
- Physical ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in various positions
- Valid driver's license
- Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, or on-call for emergencies
Preferred Qualifications
- Master electrician license
- Experience with commercial or institutional electrical systems
- Knowledge of low-voltage systems, fire alarms, and security systems
- Experience in educational facilities or public sector
- Additional trade certifications or training

- Advanced technical knowledge of electrical systems and components
- Proficiency in electrical installation, maintenance, and repair techniques
- Strong understanding of National Electrical Code and local building codes
- Ability to diagnose complex electrical problems using testing equipment

Work Environment
This position works throughout school facilities including electrical rooms, mechanical spaces, and throughout buildings. The role involves work in confined spaces, at heights, and in various conditions. The electrician typically works independently but coordinates with other facilities staff and contractors. The position requires flexibility to respond to emergency calls, which may involve evening, weekend, or on-call work, especially for critical electrical issues affecting school operations.
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds or more on a regular basis. The role involves frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching. Employees must be able to work in various weather conditions and environments, including outdoor settings. The position requires manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to operate tools and equipment safely.
