Position Overview

The General Maintenance Worker performs a wide variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks to keep school facilities in safe and working condition. This role requires knowledge of multiple trades including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, and general repairs. The position involves responding to work orders, performing preventative maintenance, and ensuring facilities meet safety and operational standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general repairs including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and painting work
  • Respond to maintenance work orders in a timely and efficient manner
  • Conduct preventative maintenance on building systems and equipment
  • Inspect facilities for safety hazards, needed repairs, and maintenance issues
  • Repair or replace fixtures, equipment, furniture, and building components
  • Maintain tools and equipment, ensuring they are in safe working condition
  • Coordinate with contractors for specialized repairs beyond in-house capabilities
  • Assist with setup and breakdown for school events and activities
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and time spent
  • Follow all safety protocols and building codes
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations
  • Assist other facilities staff as needed

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of general maintenance or facilities repair experience
  • Knowledge of basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and painting techniques
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and repair manuals
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds
  • Physical ability to work in various positions including climbing, bending, and reaching
  • Valid driver's license
  • Basic computer skills for work order systems
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings or weekends for emergencies

Preferred Qualifications

  • Trade school certification or apprenticeship completion
  • Experience in educational facilities or public sector
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
  • Multiple trade certifications (electrical, plumbing, HVAC)

  • Skilled in multiple trades including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and painting

Work Environment

This position works throughout school facilities including classrooms, offices, mechanical rooms, and outdoor areas. The role involves both indoor and outdoor work in various conditions. The maintenance worker typically responds to work orders throughout the day and may need to work in confined spaces or at heights. The position requires flexibility to respond to emergencies and may involve evening or weekend work.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds or more on a regular basis. The role involves frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching. Employees must be able to work in various weather conditions and environments, including outdoor settings. The position requires manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to operate tools and equipment safely.
