Position Overview
The Groundskeeper / Landscaper is responsible for maintaining school grounds, athletic fields, and outdoor facilities to ensure a safe, attractive, and functional environment for students, staff, and community members. This role involves seasonal work, physical labor, and attention to detail in landscaping and grounds maintenance.
Responsibilities
- Mow, edge, and maintain lawns and athletic fields
- Plant, prune, and maintain trees, shrubs, flowers, and other landscaping
- Apply fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides according to safety guidelines and regulations
- Maintain irrigation systems including repairs and seasonal adjustments
- Remove snow and ice from walkways, parking lots, and building entrances
- Operate and maintain grounds equipment including mowers, trimmers, blowers, and snow removal equipment
- Maintain outdoor athletic facilities including fields, tracks, and courts
- Pick up litter and debris from grounds and parking areas
- Assist with outdoor event setup and breakdown
- Maintain tools and equipment, reporting needed repairs or replacements
- Follow all safety protocols and use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
- Coordinate with other facilities staff on integrated maintenance tasks
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Previous landscaping or grounds maintenance experience preferred
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds
- Knowledge of landscaping techniques, plant care, and seasonal maintenance
- Ability to operate grounds maintenance equipment safely
- Physical ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
- Valid driver's license preferred
- Willingness to work flexible hours including early mornings, evenings, or weekends as needed
Skills & Competencies
- Knowledge of landscaping and grounds maintenance practices
- Ability to operate and maintain grounds equipment including mowers, trimmers, and snow removal equipment
- Understanding of plant care, fertilization, and pest management
- Basic knowledge of irrigation systems
- Physical stamina and ability to work in outdoor conditions
- Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining attractive grounds
- Safety awareness and ability to follow protocols
- Time management and ability to prioritize seasonal tasks
- Basic mechanical skills for equipment maintenance
Work Environment
This position works primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow. The role involves physical labor and may require early morning starts, especially during peak mowing season or for snow removal. The groundskeeper typically works independently but coordinates with other facilities staff. The position may require weekend work for athletic events or emergency weather response.
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds or more on a regular basis. The role involves frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching. Employees must be able to work in various weather conditions and environments, including outdoor settings. The position requires manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to operate tools and equipment safely.
