Position Overview

The Head Custodian / Plant Manager oversees all custodial operations and facilities maintenance for our school district. This leadership role is responsible for managing custodial staff, coordinating maintenance activities, ensuring compliance with safety and health regulations, and maintaining facilities to the highest standards. The position requires strong leadership, organizational skills, and technical knowledge of building systems and maintenance procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, train, and evaluate custodial staff across multiple facilities
  • Develop and implement cleaning schedules, procedures, and quality standards
  • Coordinate with administration on facilities needs, events, and special projects
  • Inspect facilities regularly to ensure cleanliness, safety, and maintenance standards are met
  • Manage inventory of cleaning supplies, equipment, and maintenance materials
  • Prepare and monitor budgets for custodial operations and supplies
  • Coordinate with contractors and vendors for specialized maintenance and repairs
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations
  • Maintain records of maintenance activities, inspections, and staff schedules
  • Respond to emergency maintenance situations and coordinate appropriate responses
  • Conduct safety training and ensure proper use of equipment and chemicals
  • Assist with hiring, scheduling, and performance management of custodial staff

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; associate's degree preferred
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of custodial or facilities maintenance experience
  • Previous supervisory or management experience required
  • Knowledge of building systems including HVAC, plumbing, and electrical basics
  • Understanding of safety regulations, OSHA requirements, and environmental standards
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel between facilities
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in facilities management or related field
  • Experience in educational facilities or public sector
  • Knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
  • Bilingual communication skills
  • Experience with budget management and vendor relations

Work Environment

This position works across multiple school facilities and may require travel between locations. The role involves both office work and hands-on facilities inspection and maintenance. The Head Custodian typically works during regular business hours but must be available for emergencies and may need to work evenings or weekends for special events or urgent maintenance needs.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds or more on a regular basis. The role involves frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching. Employees must be able to work in various weather conditions and environments, including outdoor settings. The position requires manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to operate tools and equipment safely.
