Position Overview
The HVAC Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems across school facilities. This specialized role ensures optimal indoor air quality, temperature control, and energy efficiency to support effective learning environments. The position requires technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently on complex systems.
Responsibilities
- Install, maintain, and repair HVAC systems including furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, and ventilation equipment
- Perform preventative maintenance on HVAC equipment according to manufacturer specifications
- Diagnose and troubleshoot HVAC system problems using diagnostic tools and technical knowledge
- Replace or repair defective components including compressors, motors, fans, and controls
- Test and calibrate HVAC systems to ensure optimal performance and efficiency
- Monitor energy usage and implement energy-saving measures
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance, repairs, and parts inventory
- Coordinate with contractors for major installations or specialized repairs
- Respond to emergency HVAC service calls, including after-hours when necessary
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and refrigerant handling requirements
- Train other staff on basic HVAC operation and maintenance procedures
- Maintain tools, equipment, and parts inventory
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or certification in HVAC preferred
- Minimum of 3-5 years of HVAC installation, maintenance, and repair experience
- EPA certification for refrigerant handling (Type I, II, or Universal)
- Knowledge of HVAC systems, controls, and electrical components
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds
- Physical ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in various weather conditions
- Valid driver's license
- Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, or on-call for emergencies
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's degree or technical certification in HVAC/R technology
- NATE (North American Technician Excellence) certification
- Experience with commercial or institutional HVAC systems
- Knowledge of building automation systems (BAS) and energy management
- Experience in educational facilities or public sector
- Multiple trade certifications

Work Environment
This position works throughout school facilities including mechanical rooms, rooftops, and equipment areas. The role involves work in confined spaces, at heights, and in various weather conditions. The HVAC technician typically works independently but coordinates with other facilities staff and contractors. The position requires flexibility to respond to emergency calls, which may involve evening, weekend, or on-call work, especially during extreme weather conditions.
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds or more on a regular basis. The role involves frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching. Employees must be able to work in various weather conditions and environments, including outdoor settings. The position requires manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to operate tools and equipment safely.
