Position Overview
The Painter is responsible for preparing surfaces and applying paint, stains, and finishes to maintain and improve the appearance of school facilities. This skilled role involves both interior and exterior painting work, surface preparation, and color matching. The position requires attention to detail, knowledge of painting techniques, and the ability to work independently to produce high-quality finishes.
Responsibilities
- Prepare surfaces for painting including scraping, sanding, patching, and priming
- Apply paint, stains, and finishes to interior and exterior surfaces using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment
- Mix and match paint colors to achieve desired results
- Protect surrounding areas and furniture using drop cloths, tape, and other materials
- Clean and maintain painting equipment including brushes, rollers, and spray guns
- Remove old paint and prepare surfaces for refinishing
- Apply caulk and sealants as needed
- Maintain accurate records of paint colors, materials used, and work completed
- Coordinate painting schedules with school activities and events
- Follow all safety protocols including proper ventilation and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Maintain inventory of paint, supplies, and equipment
- Assist with other facilities maintenance tasks as needed
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Previous painting experience preferred
- Knowledge of painting techniques, surface preparation, and paint application
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds
- Physical ability to work at heights, on ladders, and in various positions
- Ability to work in various weather conditions for exterior painting
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
- Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings or weekends for special projects
Preferred Qualifications
- Formal training or apprenticeship in painting
- Experience with commercial or institutional painting
- Knowledge of color matching and paint mixing
- Experience with spray painting equipment
- Experience in educational facilities or public sector

- Proficiency in painting techniques and surface preparation
- Knowledge of paint types, finishes, and application methods
- Ability to match colors and mix paint accurately
- Skill in using painting tools including brushes, rollers, and spray equipment

- Basic math skills for calculating paint quantities and coverage

Work Environment
This position works throughout school facilities including classrooms, hallways, offices, and exterior surfaces. The role involves work at heights, on ladders, and in various positions. The painter may work indoors or outdoors depending on the project, and must work in various weather conditions for exterior painting. The position requires flexibility to work around school schedules, which may involve evening or weekend work during school breaks or for special projects.
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds or more on a regular basis. The role involves frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching. Employees must be able to work in various weather conditions and environments, including outdoor settings. The position requires manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to operate tools and equipment safely.
