Position Overview
The School Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. This role requires attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to work independently while following established cleaning protocols and safety procedures. The custodian plays a critical role in ensuring our facilities support effective learning and working environments.
Responsibilities
- Perform daily cleaning tasks including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and dusting of classrooms, offices, hallways, and common areas
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, including fixtures, mirrors, floors, and restocking supplies
- Empty trash receptacles and replace liners throughout the facility
- Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and request replenishment as needed
- Report maintenance issues, safety hazards, and needed repairs to facilities management
- Set up and break down furniture and equipment for school events, meetings, and activities
- Follow all safety protocols and use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
- Assist with snow removal, grounds maintenance, and outdoor cleaning as needed
- Secure buildings by locking doors and windows and setting alarms as directed
- Respond promptly to emergency cleaning situations such as spills or accidents
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Previous custodial or janitorial experience preferred
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds
- Basic knowledge of cleaning equipment, chemicals, and safety procedures
- Strong attention to detail and time management skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Physical ability to perform cleaning tasks including bending, stooping, and reaching
- Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, or early mornings as needed
Skills & Competencies
- Knowledge of cleaning techniques and proper use of cleaning chemicals
- Ability to operate cleaning equipment including floor buffers, vacuums, and pressure washers
- Strong work ethic and reliability
- Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high cleanliness standards
- Basic communication skills to interact with staff and report issues
- Time management and ability to complete tasks within designated timeframes
- Safety awareness and ability to identify and report hazards
Work Environment
This position works primarily indoors in school facilities including classrooms, offices, restrooms, and common areas. The role may require work in various weather conditions for outdoor cleaning and maintenance tasks. The custodian typically works independently but may coordinate with other facilities staff. The position requires flexibility to work during non-school hours, including evenings, weekends, and school breaks.
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds or more on a regular basis. The role involves frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching. Employees must be able to work in various weather conditions and environments, including outdoor settings. The position requires manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to operate tools and equipment safely.
