Position Overview

The Before/After School Program Leader plans and leads extended day programs that provide safe, engaging activities for students outside regular school hours. This role creates a positive, structured environment where students can participate in academic support, enrichment activities, and recreational programs. The program leader ensures student safety, facilitates learning activities, and helps students develop social skills and interests.

Responsibilities

Instructional Support

  • Provide instructional assistance to students under the direction of certified teachers
  • Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning concepts and skills
  • Assist teachers with lesson preparation, material organization, and classroom setup
  • Support students with academic tasks, following teacher guidance and instructional plans
  • Monitor student progress and provide feedback to teachers on student performance
  • Assist with classroom management and behavior support strategies
  • Help maintain a positive, inclusive, and productive learning environment
  • Support students with diverse learning needs and accommodations
  • Assist with technology integration and use of instructional tools and resources

Student Supervision

  • Supervise student behavior and enforce safety rules and regulations
  • Monitor students and provide appropriate assistance as needed
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies including medical situations and behavioral incidents
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents regarding student behavior and incidents
  • Complete required documentation including incident reports and behavior logs
  • Maintain order and discipline while fostering a positive environment
  • Attend mandatory safety meetings and training sessions on student supervision

Program Planning & Leadership

  • Plan and implement age-appropriate activities including academic support, enrichment, and recreation
  • Develop daily schedules and activity plans that balance structure and choice
  • Lead group activities, games, and learning experiences
  • Organize special events, field trips, and program celebrations
  • Create a positive, inclusive program culture that supports student engagement
  • Adapt activities to meet diverse student interests and needs

Academic Support

  • Provide homework help and academic support during program hours
  • Facilitate learning activities that reinforce classroom instruction
  • Support students with reading, math, and other academic skills
  • Create engaging educational activities that complement school curriculum
  • Help students develop study skills and learning strategies

Student Supervision & Safety

  • Supervise students during all program activities and transitions
  • Ensure student safety and enforce program rules and expectations
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and student sign-in/sign-out procedures
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and behavioral incidents
  • Communicate with parents regarding student participation and concerns
  • Coordinate with school staff regarding student needs and program integration

Program Operations

  • Set up and clean up program spaces and materials
  • Maintain program supplies and equipment
  • Assist with program registration and enrollment processes
  • Help coordinate with school staff, parents, and community partners
  • Participate in program planning meetings and professional development

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (minimum)
  • Some college coursework or experience working with children preferred
  • Ability to pass background check and fingerprint clearance
  • Physical ability to participate in activities and supervise students
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to plan and lead engaging activities for school-aged children
  • Patience and positive attitude when working with students
  • Ability to work flexible hours including early mornings and/or afternoons
  • Basic first aid knowledge (certification may be required)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or higher in education, recreation, child development, or related field
  • Previous experience working with children in educational or recreational settings
  • Experience planning and leading activities for school-aged children
  • Training in child development, behavior management, or youth programming
  • First aid and CPR certification
  • Knowledge of academic support strategies and homework help techniques
  • Experience with diverse student populations
  • Bilingual skills (as applicable to district needs)
  • Training in program planning and activity leadership

Work Environment

This position works during extended day hours, typically early morning (before school) and/or afternoon/evening (after school). The program leader works in school facilities including classrooms, gymnasiums, cafeterias, and outdoor spaces. The role involves active participation in activities and frequent movement throughout program spaces. The position requires flexibility to work split shifts (before and after school) or extended afternoon hours, depending on program structure. The program leader may work with students across multiple grade levels and program groups.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and kneel frequently throughout the workday. The role involves occasional lifting and carrying of materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. Employees must be able to move around the classroom and school building, assist students with mobility needs, and participate in physical activities as part of instructional support. The position requires manual dexterity for handling instructional materials and technology.
