Position Overview

The Computer Lab Assistant manages computer lab operations and provides technology support to students and teachers. This role works under the direction of teachers and technology coordinators to ensure computer labs run smoothly, assist students with technology use, and support digital literacy instruction. The assistant helps students develop technology skills and troubleshoots basic technical issues to keep learning activities on track.

Responsibilities

Instructional Support

  • Provide instructional assistance to students under the direction of certified teachers
  • Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning concepts and skills
  • Assist teachers with lesson preparation, material organization, and classroom setup
  • Support students with academic tasks, following teacher guidance and instructional plans
  • Monitor student progress and provide feedback to teachers on student performance
  • Assist with classroom management and behavior support strategies
  • Help maintain a positive, inclusive, and productive learning environment
  • Support students with diverse learning needs and accommodations
  • Assist with technology integration and use of instructional tools and resources

Student Supervision

  • Supervise student behavior and enforce safety rules and regulations
  • Monitor students and provide appropriate assistance as needed
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies including medical situations and behavioral incidents
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents regarding student behavior and incidents
  • Complete required documentation including incident reports and behavior logs
  • Maintain order and discipline while fostering a positive environment
  • Attend mandatory safety meetings and training sessions on student supervision

Technology Support

  • Assist students with computer use, software applications, and digital tools
  • Troubleshoot basic technology issues including login problems, software errors, and hardware malfunctions
  • Help students navigate educational software, online resources, and learning platforms
  • Support students with typing, word processing, presentations, and other digital projects
  • Assist teachers with technology setup for lessons and activities
  • Monitor student computer use and ensure appropriate internet and software usage
  • Help maintain computer lab equipment including computers, printers, and peripherals
  • Coordinate with IT support for advanced technical issues and equipment maintenance
  • Assist with inventory and tracking of technology equipment and software licenses

Lab Management

  • Set up and prepare computer lab for classes and activities
  • Ensure computers are properly logged out and shut down at end of sessions
  • Maintain organization and cleanliness of computer lab
  • Help enforce lab rules and procedures for safe and appropriate technology use
  • Assist with scheduling and coordination of lab usage
  • Support students during independent work time and technology projects

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (minimum)
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with common software applications
  • Ability to pass background check and fingerprint clearance
  • Physical ability to perform job duties including standing and light lifting
  • Strong problem-solving skills and patience when working with technology
  • Ability to follow directions and work collaboratively with teachers
  • Basic troubleshooting skills for common computer issues
  • Strong communication skills for assisting students and staff
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding student information

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or higher in computer science, information technology, or related field
  • Technology certifications (e.g., CompTIA, Microsoft, Google)
  • Previous experience working with computers or in a technology support role
  • Experience working with children or in an educational setting
  • Knowledge of educational software and learning management systems
  • Experience with troubleshooting hardware and software issues
  • Bilingual skills (as applicable to district needs)
  • Training in digital literacy instruction or educational technology
  • Knowledge of network basics and computer lab management

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong computer skills and familiarity with operating systems (Windows, Mac, Chrome OS)
  • Knowledge of common software applications (Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, etc.)
  • Basic troubleshooting skills for hardware and software issues
  • Ability to help students learn technology skills and use digital tools
  • Patience and clear communication when explaining technology concepts
  • Problem-solving skills for identifying and resolving technical issues
  • Ability to adapt to different software and technology platforms
  • Strong organizational skills for managing lab equipment and schedules
  • Knowledge of educational software and online learning platforms
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers and IT support staff
  • Understanding of internet safety and appropriate technology use

Work Environment

This position works primarily in computer lab settings, supporting students and teachers during scheduled lab periods and open lab times. The computer lab assistant may work with individual students, small groups, or provide whole-class support during technology instruction. The role involves frequent interaction with technology and requires staying current with software updates and new tools. The position may involve working in multiple lab locations or supporting mobile technology carts throughout the school.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and kneel frequently throughout the workday. The role involves occasional lifting and carrying of materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. Employees must be able to move around the classroom and school building, assist students with mobility needs, and participate in physical activities as part of instructional support. The position requires manual dexterity for handling instructional materials and technology.
