Position Overview

The Library Media Assistant supports the library media program by managing daily library operations, assisting students and staff with library resources, and providing technology support. This role works under the direction of the library media specialist to maintain an organized, welcoming library environment and help students develop information literacy and research skills. The assistant plays a key role in promoting reading and supporting student learning through library services.

Responsibilities

Instructional Support

  • Provide instructional assistance to students under the direction of certified teachers
  • Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning concepts and skills
  • Assist teachers with lesson preparation, material organization, and classroom setup
  • Support students with academic tasks, following teacher guidance and instructional plans
  • Monitor student progress and provide feedback to teachers on student performance
  • Assist with classroom management and behavior support strategies
  • Help maintain a positive, inclusive, and productive learning environment
  • Support students with diverse learning needs and accommodations
  • Assist with technology integration and use of instructional tools and resources

Student Supervision

  • Supervise student behavior and enforce safety rules and regulations
  • Monitor students and provide appropriate assistance as needed
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies including medical situations and behavioral incidents
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents regarding student behavior and incidents
  • Complete required documentation including incident reports and behavior logs
  • Maintain order and discipline while fostering a positive environment
  • Attend mandatory safety meetings and training sessions on student supervision

Library Operations

  • Check books and materials in and out using library management systems
  • Shelve books and materials according to library organization systems (Dewey Decimal, etc.)
  • Assist students and staff with locating books, resources, and information
  • Process new library materials including cataloging, labeling, and preparing for circulation
  • Maintain library organization and ensure materials are properly shelved and accessible
  • Assist with library displays, bulletin boards, and promotional materials
  • Manage library equipment including computers, printers, and audiovisual equipment
  • Assist with library inventory and weeding of outdated materials
  • Help maintain a quiet, productive learning environment in the library

Technology Support

  • Assist students and staff with technology use including computers, tablets, and software
  • Help troubleshoot basic technology issues and coordinate with IT support as needed
  • Support students with research databases, online resources, and digital tools
  • Assist with multimedia equipment setup and operation for presentations and events
  • Help students with digital literacy skills and online research strategies

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (minimum)
  • Associate's degree or library technician certification preferred
  • Ability to pass background check and fingerprint clearance
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with library systems
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks
  • Physical ability to shelve books, lift materials, and perform library tasks
  • Strong customer service skills for assisting students and staff
  • Basic knowledge of library organization systems
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding student information

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or higher in library science, education, or related field
  • Library technician certification or training
  • Previous experience working in a library or educational setting
  • Experience with library management systems (Destiny, Follett, etc.)
  • Technology skills including troubleshooting and supporting various devices
  • Knowledge of children's and young adult literature
  • Bilingual skills (as applicable to district needs)
  • Experience with cataloging and library organization systems
  • Training in information literacy and research skills

Work Environment

This position works primarily in the school library or media center, managing daily operations and assisting students and staff. The library media assistant works closely with the library media specialist and may interact with students throughout the day during library visits, research periods, and reading times. The role involves both independent work (shelving, cataloging) and direct student assistance. The position requires flexibility to adapt to varying library traffic and activities throughout the school day.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and kneel frequently throughout the workday. The role involves occasional lifting and carrying of materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. Employees must be able to move around the classroom and school building, assist students with mobility needs, and participate in physical activities as part of instructional support. The position requires manual dexterity for handling instructional materials and technology.
