Position Overview
The School Counselor provides comprehensive counseling services to support student academic achievement, career development, and social-emotional well-being. This licensed position requires expertise in case management, student evaluation, and collaborative problem-solving with students, families, teachers, and administrators. The counselor plays a critical role in identifying student needs, developing intervention plans, and ensuring all students have access to the support they need to succeed.
Responsibilities
Case Management
- Develop and maintain individual student support plans and 504 accommodation plans
- Manage caseloads of students requiring ongoing counseling support and intervention
- Coordinate with teachers, administrators, and families to implement student support strategies
- Document student progress, interventions, and outcomes in compliance with district policies
- Monitor student attendance, academic progress, and behavioral concerns
- Facilitate student transitions between grade levels and schools
Evaluation & Assessment
- Conduct comprehensive student needs assessments and evaluations
- Administer and interpret standardized assessments and screening tools
- Evaluate student academic progress, social-emotional development, and career readiness
- Assess crisis situations and determine appropriate intervention strategies
- Monitor and evaluate effectiveness of counseling interventions and support plans
- Prepare evaluation reports and recommendations for student support teams
Direct Student Services
- Provide individual and group counseling sessions addressing academic, career, and personal/social concerns
- Deliver classroom guidance lessons on topics such as study skills, career exploration, and social skills
- Facilitate small group interventions for students with similar needs
- Provide crisis intervention and immediate support for students in distress
- Support students in developing academic plans and career goals
Collaboration & Consultation
- Collaborate with teachers to support student success in the classroom
- Consult with parents/guardians regarding student needs and support strategies
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings including IEP teams, 504 teams, and student support teams
- Coordinate with community resources and outside service providers
- Serve as liaison between school, families, and community agencies
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in School Counseling, Guidance Counseling, or closely related field
- Valid state school counselor certification/license (as required by state)
- Completion of state-approved school counseling program
- Ability to pass background check and fingerprint clearance
- Knowledge of state and federal laws governing student services and special education
- Understanding of child development, learning theories, and counseling techniques
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries
- Experience or training in crisis intervention and suicide prevention
Preferred Qualifications
- National Certified School Counselor (NCSC) credential
- Previous experience as a school counselor in K-12 settings
- Experience working with diverse student populations
- Training in trauma-informed care and restorative practices
- Bilingual skills (as applicable to district needs)
- Experience with college and career readiness programs
- Knowledge of data-driven decision making and program evaluation
- Experience with student information systems and counseling documentation software

Work Environment
This position works primarily in school settings, including private office spaces, classrooms, and various school locations. The role involves frequent collaboration with teachers, administrators, support staff, and families. The position may require attendance at evening events, parent meetings, and school activities. The professional works as part of a student services team and reports to building and district administrators. The position follows the school calendar schedule and may involve travel between school sites as needed.
Physical Requirements
This role requires the ability to sit for extended periods, use a computer keyboard and mouse, and communicate effectively via phone and video conferencing. The position involves occasional standing, walking, and lifting of light objects (up to 10 pounds). Employees must have sufficient vision and hearing to perform essential job functions.
