Position Overview
The School Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive health services to support student health, safety, and academic success. This licensed position requires expertise in health assessment, case management, and medical intervention. The nurse conducts health evaluations, manages student health conditions, and collaborates with educators, families, and healthcare providers to ensure students receive appropriate health support and services.
Responsibilities
Case Management
- Manage caseloads of students with chronic health conditions including diabetes, asthma, allergies, and other medical needs
- Develop and implement Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Action Plans (EAPs)
- Coordinate with teachers, administrators, and families to implement health support strategies
- Document student health status, interventions, and outcomes in compliance with district policies and health regulations
- Monitor student health conditions and medication administration
- Facilitate communication between school, families, and healthcare providers
Evaluation & Assessment
- Conduct comprehensive health screenings including vision, hearing, and scoliosis screenings
- Perform health assessments and evaluations of student health concerns
- Assess student health needs and determine appropriate interventions and accommodations
- Evaluate immunization compliance and health records
- Monitor and evaluate effectiveness of health interventions and support plans
- Prepare health assessment reports and recommendations for student support teams
Direct Health Services
- Provide first aid and emergency care for students and staff
- Administer medications and medical treatments as prescribed by healthcare providers
- Manage student health conditions including diabetes care, asthma management, and allergy response
- Provide health education to students, staff, and families
- Conduct health screenings and maintain health records
- Respond to health emergencies and coordinate with emergency medical services
Health Education & Prevention
- Deliver health education lessons on topics such as nutrition, hygiene, disease prevention, and wellness
- Provide training to staff on health-related topics including medication administration, health conditions, and emergency procedures
- Support health promotion and disease prevention initiatives
- Coordinate with community health partners and public health agencies
- Participate in health-related professional development and stay current with best practices in school nursing
- Maintain professional licensure and continuing education requirements
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) or Associate's degree in Nursing (ADN) with RN license
- Valid state Registered Nurse (RN) license
- Valid state school nurse certification/license (as required by state)
- Current CPR and First Aid certification
- Ability to pass background check and fingerprint clearance
- Knowledge of state and federal health regulations and school health requirements
- Understanding of child development, health conditions, and medical management
- Strong assessment and clinical skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries
- Experience or training in pediatric nursing and school health
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) or higher
- National Certified School Nurse (NCSN) credential
- Previous experience as a school nurse in K-12 settings
- Experience working with diverse student populations
- Training in chronic disease management, diabetes care, and asthma management
- Bilingual skills (as applicable to district needs)
- Experience with health information systems and electronic health records
- Knowledge of special education health requirements and IEP processes
- Training in emergency preparedness and crisis response

Work Environment
For Certified Professionals
This position works primarily in school settings, including private office spaces, classrooms, and various school locations. The role involves frequent collaboration with teachers, administrators, support staff, and families. The position may require attendance at evening events, parent meetings, and school activities. The professional works as part of a student services team and reports to building and district administrators. The position follows the school calendar schedule and may involve travel between school sites as needed.
For Nurses
The nurse maintains a health office/clinic space equipped with medical supplies and equipment. The position may require travel between school sites and attendance at health-related meetings and events.
Physical Requirements
This role requires the ability to sit for extended periods, use a computer keyboard and mouse, and communicate effectively via phone and video conferencing. The position involves occasional standing, walking, and lifting of light objects (up to 10 pounds). Employees must have sufficient vision and hearing to perform essential job functions.
