Position Overview
The Bus Mechanic / Diesel Technician is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing school buses and other district vehicles to ensure safe and reliable transportation. This safety-sensitive position requires technical expertise in diesel engines, air brake systems, and school bus-specific equipment. The mechanic plays a critical role in keeping the transportation fleet operational and compliant with safety regulations.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine maintenance including oil changes, tire rotation, brake inspections, and fluid checks
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems on school buses and district vehicles
- Conduct state-mandated safety inspections and emissions testing
- Repair and maintain air brake systems, steering, suspension, and transmission systems
- Troubleshoot and repair diesel engines, fuel systems, and exhaust systems
- Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repairs using fleet management software
- Order parts and supplies, maintaining inventory of commonly used items
- Perform emergency road service and respond to breakdowns as needed
- Test drive vehicles to verify repairs and ensure safe operation
- Train and mentor apprentice mechanics as assigned
- Follow all safety protocols and use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
- Maintain a clean and organized shop environment
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of technical training program in diesel mechanics, automotive technology, or related field
- Minimum 3 years of experience in diesel engine repair and maintenance
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to pass pre-employment and ongoing drug/alcohol screening
- Ability to pass background check
- ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications preferred
- Knowledge of air brake systems, electrical systems, and hydraulic systems
- Physical ability to lift up to 75 pounds and work in various positions
Preferred Qualifications
Commercial Driver's License
Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B or higher with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements. Clean driving record with no serious traffic violations. Minimum age of 21 years (as required for CDL).
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- ASE Master Technician certification
- Previous school bus or fleet maintenance experience
- Experience with fleet management software
- Welding and fabrication skills
- EPA Section 609 certification for air conditioning service
Skills & Competencies
- Advanced diagnostic and troubleshooting skills for diesel engines and vehicle systems
- Knowledge of air brake systems, electrical systems, and hydraulic systems
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and schematics
- Proficiency with diagnostic equipment including scan tools and multimeters
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving abilities
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
- Time management and ability to prioritize urgent repairs
- Communication skills for documenting work and coordinating with drivers and supervisors
- Safety awareness and knowledge of OSHA regulations
- Physical stamina and ability to work in various positions and conditions
Work Environment
This position works primarily in a vehicle maintenance shop, with occasional work outdoors or on the road for emergency repairs. The mechanic works with various tools, equipment, and potentially hazardous materials. The role may require working early mornings, evenings, or weekends to address urgent repairs or maintenance needs. The position involves regular interaction with drivers, transportation supervisors, and parts suppliers.

This position requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds or more on a regular basis. The role involves frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching. Employees must be able to work in various weather conditions and environments, including outdoor settings.
